Chapter Eight

Kevin

“Jules, say something so I know you’re okay.” I holler using exposed roots and stones to make my way into the ten-foot ravine.

“I’m okay,” she yells back. That’s something, at least I’ve heard her voice.

I hustle to the bottom, and bend down beside her, already noticing bruising on her arms and legs.

“I’m going to touch you, and ask you some questions, just say yes or no. Don’t shake your head.”

She immediately shakes her head yes. I laugh a bit, that happens nearly every time I assess someone after a fall, unless I have the neck brace to hold them in place. Out here, I only have what I’ve brought in my bag.

Starting at her head, I run my fingers through her hair looking for any cuts or abrasions, perform an eye traction test, then run my hands down over her shoulders, her arms, each curve, and down her legs until she winces in pain at the left ankle.

“This spot is painful?”

“Yes,” she winces again. Her normally pale face is pink and covered in dirt.

The ankle looks bruised, but it’s not broken, I can tell from the way the bone is still set firmly in the joint.

I pull my backpack off and stabilize her ankle with some gauze I carry with me. If this is the worst of it, we’re in luck.

‘Why were you running away from me?”

She doesn’t answer. Instead she turns her head to the side to avoid eye contact.

“Really? We’re adults, we’ve known each other forever. We kissed, what’s the big deal?”

She snaps her face back towards me. “The big deal is that now I’m a cheating monster!”

“You’re not a cheating monster, I kissed you.” I tie the gauze up around her ankle and sit with one leg bent at her side. “You’re a victim of circumstance.”

Her eyes meet mine and that same electricity returns, pushing me to kiss her again, touch her, hold her, claim her. But I hold back.

“That’s the thing Kev, I—”

“Everything okay down there?” a deep voice interrupts. Colored trees are cover the top of the ravine so I can’t tell who it is. I want to know what she was going to say, but we need the help, so I answer the man back.

“Not really, I’ve got an injured woman. Not getting much cell reception down here either. You wouldn’t mind helping, would you?” Before I’ve finished the sentence, the man is hopping down into the ravine as though he’s climbed in and out of them professionally for twenty years.

It’s Max. I didn’t have to see his face, to know who it was, his footwork says it all. Max is a local woodsman. He’s lived in the backwoods of Wildwood County since childhood after a series of bad foster homes.

“Kevin… I think the last time I saw you, we were in a ditch just like this one.” He’s tall and brooding looking, but I’ve always known him to be helpful.

I laugh a bit, “Yeah, thankfully this one isn’t quite as deep. My girl fell and we’re going to need some help getting out of here.
